This suit is interesting and exciting - although I’m sorry that this woman’s life is going to have to be turned upside down in order to see this through.

Horizon Group Management sued Amanda Bonnen Monday for publishing a false and defamatory tweet on Twitter May 12.

Just to give you some perspective: This company is suing her for $50,000 for a tweet. Want to know what this company did in order to bring suit? Someone in their office made a phone call, dispatched their lawyers, and then went on about his day. The laywers will call with updates.

Meanwhile, this single woman who was served papers, now has to take time off work, scramble to find money and a decent attorney. She will have to appear in court, further disrupting her life, while those suing her will most likely remain at work and with their families day in and day out, while their laywers, also going about their daily lives, will appear for them.

These lawsuits take a serious toll on the individuals.

This lawsuit is absurd. I hope they appear before a judge that is knowledgable about the internet, the WWW, and the online social media world. I hope it’s a judge that understands you cannot legislate away modern technology - that the law must evolve as society and technology evolve.
